"Budding Escape": My first GameJam

With the theme of “Escape” and the additional wildcards of “One Room” and “Use Sunlight” for the Godot WildJam, I went with the idea of a swinging platformer, where you played as a neglected plant that needed to escape its greenhouse.

Process

The main tools I used where Godot for the Game Engine, and Blockbench for putting together low poly models. The key issue I ran into was the swinging mechanic, into which I sunk most of my time to still end up with a result I wasn’t particularly happy with. It ended up as more of a Grapple Gun than a swing. Launching the player upwards. But under time crunch, I moved on to finish up a few other assets and the level management. With a 2am submission thanks to Japan Timezone, I had completed my first game.

The feedback from the Jam was positive, and had some great suggestions. I doubt I will get around to implementing any though, as it’s served its purpose as a great way to learn and at the moment I think I’ll simply move onto the next GameJam. Onwards and Upwards!
